Renina Jarmon is a blogger, author and doctoral student. Her graduate studies specifically focus on the politics of Black women’s digital story-telling archives and the political ecosystems of the internet. Currently, she is studying gender, race and sexuality in the media and she also teaches a college course- Introduction to Women’s Studies. Renina has been invited to speak at several institutions and organizations about topics such as gender, race and blogging including the Barnard Center for Research on Women, The WESTAF Symposium in Aspen, Words, Beats and Life and Art Sanctuary’s Annual Writing Festival in Philadelphia.
I had been feeling uncomfortable about the Liv/Fitz affair this entire show, and when they dropped the Sally Hemings line I was like, “THAT’S IT!” I really dislike media that glamorizes marital infidelity because it’s a large part of why my parents divorced. It’s not cute. So, while I appreciate that Liv is allowed to be shown having feelings, being vulnerable, and not conforming to the Black Superwoman stereotype, I reallllly hate that she puts herself through so much torment for a man who is clearly using her. I don’t see any evidence of love between the, just passion/chemistry/lust.
I honestly don’t get why some people are trying so hard to downplay the Hemings parallel. Yes, Hemings was a child, and even if she was an adult she was still a slave. So true consent was impossible. However, a large power differential remains. If the affair were exposed, Liv would no doubt be painted as a scheming temptress who “trapped” the President into “forgetting” his duties to wife and country. Fitz is forever putting his hands on her-grabbing her arm to keep her from leaving the room, shoving her against a tree and fondling her in front of a half dozen Secret Service agents, pushing her up onto his desk even after she says “No” and “I can’t do this”. When she justifiably brings up why they shouldn’t be together, he accuses her of playing the race card and makes himself the victim! If that’s not codependent and emotionally abusive, I don’t know what is.
Despite those issues, Scandal is a fun, gripping show to watch and further proves the point that black women are bankable.
